Golden Axe II Review. June 11, 2007 - It must have been disappointing to be a Golden Axe fan in 1991. The original arcade game had been spectacular: a fantasy-themed, two-player brawler with great. Golden Axe II. Each of the heroes from the first game return to battle the forces of evil villain Dark Guld in this sequel. While Golden Axe II was a Mega Drive/Genesis exclusive from a development point of view, it saw limited arcade exposure in the MegaPlay series of arcade machines. Released in 1991, the game featured new magic for each of.

Golden Axe 2 is nostalgic fun for veterans but newcomers might not understand what all the fuss is about.

Walking down memory lane is something that we've all done with a sense of glee. Sega appreciates this and has done a fantastic job of converting some true classics to the iOS devices such as Sonic, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. So it makes sense to see Golden Axe 2 appear as well, and what a fine conversion it is. The gameplay is the same as ever. Players choose one of three fighters (a barbarian man, Amazonian woman and a dwarf) then hack and slash their way through the seven levels on offer. It'll only take a couple of hours to complete admittedly but they're an enjoyable couple of hours. A virtual d-pad and buttons dictate the action and it's easy to control throughout. One button jumps, another slashes and the third unleashes the special magical attack that can be built up by collecting magic potions. At the end of each stage, you come across a form of boss battle which adds a bit more of a challenge. You can also hop on some mounts in order to have an extra edge in battle.

It's all simple enough and certainly indicative of its early 1990s origins but there's still an addictive quality to it. The original release was most enjoyable when played alongside another player. Fortunately you can still do that here with multiplayer available through bluetooth connectivity.
Golden Axe 2 is showing its age a little now at nearly 20 years but it's still fun. If you've never played the title before then $3 might feel a little steep for only a few hours of fun, but if you've been here before, you'll just be so pleased that your memories weren't just rose tinted, they were the truth. It's a retro classic you'll be pleased to have in your collection.
Golden Axe II is a fantasy side-scrolling beat 'em up created by SEGA in 1991 as a sequel to one of the most famous arcades of all time. While the original Golden Axe was first released as a coin-up, and then ported to several home computers and console, Golden Axe II was created for the SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive, and it was never ported to other home consoles or computers. Golden Axe 2 was a Genesis exclusive. The reception was not so positive, many criticized the lack of originality. As a matter of fact, Golden Axe II is more an enhanced version, rather than a sequel. But 'enhanced version' means there are improvements, right? In fact there are quite a few of them: you can now decide the anount of mana you want to use for your magic; the spells are different (the dwarf has a kind of earthquake, which is much more appropriate); the back attack is now more powerful; enemy AI is a bit better (not exceptional), and you can decide where to throw the enemies. The gameplay if also faster, and the controls more responsive.Add to this, a new mode called Duel, that will put you in an arena where you can challenge the computer or your friend. Useful for the ones that were missing a competitive mode.Golden Axe was hack 'n' slash at its best, and this sequel is faithful to the formula, just better.
If you prefer the original nobody will complain, but you should also try this one. The choice is yours!Review by: ManuPublished: 11 December 2019, 11:26 am.
